Barefoot: what are barefoot shoes

The human foot is not born from the shape of a shoe. It is the shoe that should start from the shape of the foot.

Barefoot shoes, also called minimalist footwear, are based on a simple principle: to give the foot more space and freedom of movement, reducing the structures that alter its natural position.

What does barefoot mean?

"Barefoot" literally means "without shoes". A barefoot shoe does not eliminate protection from the ground, but tries to interfere as little as possible with the movement of the foot. To do this, it combines anatomical shape, a flat base, flexibility, and a thin sole.

Characteristics of a barefoot shoe

Anatomical shape and wide toe box

The front part follows the real shape of the foot and allows the toes space to spread out. A wide toe is not just an aesthetic choice: it prevents the forefoot from being constrained within a narrow shape.

Zero drop

In a zero-drop shoe, the heel and forefoot are at the same height. The base remains flat, without the raised heel typical of many traditional shoes.

Thin sole

A thin sole protects from direct contact with the ground while maintaining greater sensitivity. At ANMA, we use a 4 mm Vibram® sole, chosen to combine flexibility and protection in everyday use.

Flexibility

Barefoot footwear should accompany movement, not block it. The shoe can bend and adapt to the foot during a stride.

Barefoot vs. traditional shoes

Many traditional shoes have tapered toes, raised heels, and rigid soles. Barefoot shoes adopt the opposite approach: more space in the front, zero drop, and a more flexible structure. However, there is no one-size-fits-all solution: comfort, habits, and personal needs remain important.

How to start

Switching to more minimalist footwear changes the sensations during a stride. It is reasonable to proceed gradually, alternate shoes at first, and listen to your body. In the presence of pain or specific conditions, it is advisable to consult a qualified professional.

ANMA: BERRIVAL's barefoot sneaker

ANMA is the first BERRIVAL barefoot sneaker: natural shape, zero drop, and a 4 mm Vibram® sole. It is designed in Italy and developed in the Marche region with artisans from the footwear district.

Our goal is not to adapt the foot to the shoe, but to design the shoe starting from the foot.
